Pupillage at Negeri Sembilan Bar
Pupillage, or “chambering,” is a crucial stage for aspiring lawyers in Malaysia, offering practical experience and mentorship to develop the skills necessary to practice law effectively. The Negeri Sembilan Bar provides a supportive environment for pupils to gain hands-on experience under the guidance of seasoned legal practitioners.
Eligibility for Pupillage
To undergo pupillage in Negeri Sembilan, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Possess a law degree recognized by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB).
- Successfully complete the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) or its equivalent.
- Be enrolled as a pupil-in-chambers with the High Court of Malaya.
Pupillage Duration and Structure
Pupillage lasts for 9 months, during which time pupils are attached to a legal firm under the supervision of a senior lawyer, known as a “master.”

Drafting Legal Documents
Pupils will assist in preparing legal documents such as affidavits, pleadings, and contracts, gaining hands-on experience in legal drafting.
Mentorship and Guidance
Senior practitioners will provide mentorship, offering feedback and guidance on legal practice, ethics, and professional conduct.
Court Attendance
Pupils are required to attend court regularly, observe hearings, and participate in case management.
Client Interaction
Under supervision, pupils may engage in client meetings and provide support in case preparation, including legal research and the presentation of advice.
