Negeri Sembilan Bar

Courtesy call to the High Court of Seremban – 24 June 2025

On 24 June 2025, the Negeri Sembilan Bar Committee, led by its Chairman Encik Karthigesan Shanmugam, conducted a courtesy call to the High Court of Seremban. The meeting was attended by YA Dato’ Rohani binti Ismail and YA Puan Wan Fadhillah Nor binti Wan Idris, along with Senior Assistant Registrars Puan Naeilah binti Nikrul Tarmizi and Puan Siti Nur Ain binti Ariffin. The Judges expressed their satisfaction with the improved cooperation between the Bench and the Bar, noting that case delays and unnecessary postponements have significantly decreased. They also highlighted the importance of early mediation in family matters and timely filing of interlocutory applications to facilitate smoother proceedings. On criminal matters, the Judges acknowledged that good representations have helped resolve cases quickly, and lawyers were advised to be more proactive in managing criminal appeals, especially in following up on the Rekod Rayuan process.

Additional issues discussed included the preference for physical case management sessions over virtual ones, as physical attendance was seen to move cases more efficiently. The Bar Committee also proposed reviving certain traditions, such as post–Call to the Bar luncheons with Judges and reference proceedings for late members of the Bar, which were well received. A suggestion was made to include the State Legal Advisor’s office in future Bar and Bench Games. Concerns were raised over court clerks mistakenly directing the public to the Bar Committee for matters beyond its scope. To address this, the Judges recommended placing informational banners in the court premises to clarify the Bar’s role. YA Dato’ also encouraged young lawyers to explore underrepresented areas of law such as Saman Jabatan matters. The meeting ended on a positive note, with both the Bar and the Bench agreeing that continued collaboration and clear communication are essential in enhancing the justice system.
